The earliest traces of the castle were excavated in the sixties of this
century. In 883 a fort was built to protect the Hellweg, a
mediaeval trade route, against the Vikings. In 1093 Burkhard of Broich built
the middle-age castle. In 1200 it was modernised and got a circular wall.
Different lords then lived in the castle.
In 1847 a merchant of Mülheim bought and renovated the castle. Since 1983
the city of Mülheim has been the owner of the building. Nowadays adult
