Finding Friends through Facebook

Is it possible to find real friends through social networks?

I think "friend" is the wrong word. I prefer the word "Facebook acquaintance". I prefer finding friends in real life. I think it is not possible to find 'real' friends through Facebook.
L., boy, Germany

I think that it's possible, but I think also that you are only REAL friends when you have met and have been together because then you know the person a little more.
J., girl, Denmark

It is possible but only if you have the same interests and hobbies.
B., girl, Germany

No, I don't think so. I think social networks are not a good way to meet real friends because you cannot see the person who you are chatting with, and it is a quite important problem to find real friends, because a real friend for me is the person who knows everything about you and your life and who you usually meet.
L., girl, Spain

"Real" and Facebook Friends

Is there a difference between a "normal" friend and a friend on Facebook?

Real friends are there for you when you need them. Facebook friends that you have added that aren't your real friends. They disappear when you need someone to talk to.
K., girl, United Kingdom

Of course there is. On Facebook, I also add people who are some acquaintances I met about 2-3 times, or people who are in my grade but who I never really talk to. They can't be called "friends" in real life. We just have that difference between real life and the web.
S., girl, Germany

I think there is a lot of difference. Friends in real life are there for you when you need them, and Facebook friends can only write to you. They can't hug you and give you real support, they can only promise you that they can. I don't think that you can get good friends on the internet, like the way you can in real life. Facebook and other websites are just a place to spend time and write to new people. You can become good friends, but it isn't the same as in real life.
K., girl, Denmark

I think that a facebook friend cannot be a real friend if you don't spend time together, because the relationship also needs the nonverbal communication and, at present, you cannot write this.
A., boy, Spain

Someone Wants to Be Your Friend

Do you accept everybody who wants to be your Facebook friend?

Noooooo! Of course not. Friends on Facebook can see more than other members of the network. I don't need a stranger who has information about me.
E., girl, Poland

No, when the person is a good friend, or a friend of a friend, then I accept them as my friend. When I don't know the person who sends me a request, I don't accept.
N., girl, Germany

I just accept them if I have talked with them before or if I know them.
A., girl, Spain

Lots and Lots of Friends

Is there a maximum for the number of friends on Facebook, where you would say that having even more is silly?

Psychologically the largest amount of close / intimate friends you can have is 150. The rest are probably people you know or have met but don't talk to very often. Or you may have added people because your friend has added them or you may have just added people randomly (not recommended as a good idea), which are both really bad things to do.
K., girl, United Kingdom

I think the maximum number of Facebook friends is 5,000. But in my opinion 300 - 400 is too much. I have 200 - 250 friends on Facebook.
A., girl, Germany

No. I have 826 friends on Facebook. I think it's your own choice how many you like to have.
S., girl, Denmark

There are people with about 1000 friends ! They are collecting friends. For them it is like a competition: The one with the most friends is the winner!
L., boy, Germany

200 friends is normal.
C., boy, Spain

You're Not My Friend Any Longer

Have you ever deleted friends, or have you been "defriended" by friends? Why?

No, I haven't. If you aren't going to stay their friend you shouldn't have added them. You should try to mend the friendship first and if it is still no better don't talk to them on Facebook. If you delete someone it might hurt their feelings. If they are cyberbullying you block them / delete them and tell someone what they have been saying or doing.
K., girl, United Kingdom

Yes , when I have conflicts with them.
C., girl, Germany

Yes, when some persons post too much I delete them.
H., girl, Germany

I have deleted a few friends on Facebook. This was more than likely people who I had fallen out with or don't like. I have only actually blocked people if there has been a vital reason to do so or if I don't want them to know what I'm doing or where I'm going. I haven't been defriended on Facebook; if I have I don't know about it.
S., girl, United Kingdom

Friends Abroad

How many of your Facebook friends live in other countries or far away so that you cannot meet them in person, at least not regularly?

Many! I use it mainly to talk with people whom I can't see every day. It's cheaper than text messages.
E., girl, Poland

In my opinion, Facebook should be only to 'talk' with friends who you can't talk regularly. I think people in general use it to chat with their neighbours, school friends, parents and others, but why do people spend a lot of time with people who they can meet every day or people who they can see the next day? I only like to use Facebook to contact with friends who live in different countries and for practising English and other languages.
M., boy, Spain

Nearly all my friends on facebook live here in Germany but when I was at one of our project meetings i met nice people and then I added them, as well as people from other countries on the project.
C., girl, Germany

Meeting Facebook Friends

How many of your Facebook friends have you met in person during the past months?

I have met 180 of them and seen about 100 from a distance, e.g. across the yard or street.
K., girl, Germany

On Facebook I don't have friends that aren't really my friends, so I see them all except one exchange friend that doesn't live here in Spain. I don't really understand why people accept others they don't know.
S., girl, Spain

Half of them, because I meet them at school.
L., girl, Germany

I have met quite a lot of my Facebook friends, but most of them I know attend the school I do or a school I used to go to. I do admit I have friends on my account that I have never met and I only have them because they have so many mutual friends with me.
