A Waste of Time?

How many hours a day, on average, are you online? Have you ever felt that this may be a waste of time?

Less than 1 hour a day (not including school work). It can be a nice way to relax and give you brain a rest after school but if you're online all the time then it starts to be a waste of time.
K., girl, United Kingdom

I'm online in the evening maybe 2-3 hours; additionally I listen to music and do other things. I don't sit incessantly in front of my PC.
N., girl, Germany

I think it is good to communicate with your friends so I spend 1 hour per day, more or less, talking to them by Internet. Sometimes I feel it is a waste of time when I spend more than three hours and I do nothing else.
A., girl, Spain

All right, it's really a waste time. I think it's addictive because there are always people connecting with somebody and after all you are there too, and is like a circle. Aall this time you aren't reading or cycling or meeting new friends or studying or cooking, nothing except being in your bedroom alone with a PC. Very interesting.
R., boy, Spain

I spend a lot of time on Facebook even though I could be doing things that are a lot more interesting! I think I am somewhat addicted but I try to keep away as much as I can.

Time Spent with Friends

On average, how much time per week do you spend with a) your real friends and b) your Facebook friends online?

I spend around 30 to 34 hours a week with my real friends and around 3 to 4 hours a week talking to my friends on Facebook. (who are also my real friends).
K., girl, United Kingdom

I spend about 35 hours with my real friends and I spend a lot of time with my mobile phone.
A., boy, Spain

These days it's more difficult to be with our friends because they are all day on the phone and the computer! If I can I always prefer to go with them to the cinema, or to the shopping centre.
S., boy,, Spain

I spend a lot of time with my real friends in school and in my free time. I don´t know how much time I spend online. Sometimes I spend much time online because I'm bored and sometimes I go out with friends and I don´t spend much time online.
N., boy, Germany

Addicted?

Do you know people who show symptoms of an addiction to social networking?

Yes, many friends are 24 hours online with their mobile phones, because they can't live without Facebook.
N., girl, Germany

Some of my friends (and me too sometimes) are almost online 24/7.
S., boy, Denmark

Yes, I consider myself an addict, because I'm looking at social networks every five minutes. If I'm not spending much time on social networks I get stressed.
A., girl, Spain

I know a lot of people who waste their lives on Facebook. I know for one I am one of those people. I like to update my status a lot and keep it logged in on my phone so I know what's going on. I know lots of people who are constantly on Facebook 24/7 - until they fall asleep at night.

Overcoming an Addiction

What would you recommend someone to do if he or she was addicted to Facebook or any other social-networking site?

I would talk to the person and together we would try to find a solution.
A., girl, Germany

Just stop him/her from using it a week, during it you should do outside activities with him/her and then he/she will see it is much more interesting to do things in real life.
S., girl, Spain

If I were an addicted person I would ask my mum to take all my technology (phone, computer, ipad...) and I will try to survive without the Internet.
M, girl, Spain
