Gustav-Heinemann-Schule,
Mülheim an der Ruhr (Germany)
The Gustav-Heinemann-Schule is a large
comprehensive school with about 1,600 students and 120 teachers. It
was founded in 1970. Situated on the edge of the industrial town of
Mülheim (pop. 170,000), the Gustav-Heinemann-Schule is a multicultural
place with people from 26 different countries; about 15 % of the students
have a migration background.
Children enter the school at the age
of 10 and can leave after 6 years, at the end of their compulsory schooling;
or they can stay on for another 3 years to pass their "Abitur", the
German university entrance exam.
The school's curriculum emphasizes,
among other things, project work and international cooperation with
partner schools in several European countries.
